Sum and Substance:
Thumbs Up:

Attractive looks, LED backlight display, long battery life, multitouch pad is great to work on.
Thumbs Down:

No FireWire and SD card reader. Battery is not user replaceable.
The Whiz Kid Speaks:

Apple MacBook is powered by Intel Core 2 Duo 2.26 GHz, a dual core processor, it has data bus speed of 1066 MHz, it has L2 cache of 3 MB. The system has 2 GB DDR3 SD RAM of 1066 MHz, which can be upgrade to 4 GB. For storing data, there is a 250 GB hard disk at 5400 rpm.

DVD±RW (±R DL) integrated optical drive has read speed of 24x for CD and 8x for DVD. Write speed is 24x for CD, 8x for DVD±R, 4x for DVD±R DL. Rewrite speed is 10x for CD, 4x for DVD±RW.

The screen of Apple MacBook is 13.3 inches big and has a display resolution is 1280 x 800 pixels. Graphics processor is NVIDIA GeForce 9400M Shared video memory (UMA) of 256 MB. Interfaces include 1 x Network – Ethernet 10Base-T/100Base-TX/1000Base-T – RJ-45, 1 x Audio – SPDIF output/headphones/line-in – Mini-phone 3.5 mm / TOSLINK, 2 x Hi-Speed USB – 4 pin USB Type A, 1 x Display / video – Apple mini-DisplayPort.

60 Wh lithium polymer battery has a rated life of seven hours. The system runs on Apple MacOS X 10.6. Bundled software includes Apple XCode Developer Tools, Apple Mac OS X Mail, Apple Time Machine, Apple Address Book, Apple Quick Look, Apple DVD Player, Apple iLife ‘09, Apple Spotlight, Apple QuickTime, Apple Dashboard, Apple Spaces, Apple Safari, Photo Booth, Apple iChat, Apple iCal, Front Row.

Apple gives a one year warranty for this product.
Razzle Dazzle:

Apple doesn’t compromise on looks, we all know that. The 13-inch MacBook has a unibody chassis and the case still has the polycarbonate make. On the glossy white lid, there are edges which are gently sloped which make it look a bit slimmer. The unibody also makes the system lighter, it down to 4.7 pounds from 5.1 pounds. But the unibody also means that the battery is not user replaceable.
Inside Dope:

Apple products have always been targeted at the upscale market; this new 13-inch MacBook has a $1000 price tag. But is it worth upgrading over its predecessor? We don’t think so, but if you don’t have a MacBook and are looking for a purchase, this is the time to do it. This notebook doesn’t have SD card reader and FireWire port which are now pushed to the MacBook pro lineup. But we think this is one of the best non-Pro notebooks from Apple.

Just like the MacBook Pros, the trackpad is still the same glass mulitouch one which hogs a lot of space in the wrist area. The entire pad can be used as a large left mouse button. You can also turn on the PC style interface in the settings. The trackpad really blew us off our feet, you get a large surface area, it supports multitouch gestures, which includes four fingers to minimize the open window and two finger tap which simulates the right click. It is intuitive and makes standard notebook’s trackpad look disappointing. We would like to see such trackpad on Windows based notebooks soon.

The display is 13.3 inches big and gives a resolution of 1280×800 pixels. The screen is now LED backlight which means better quality and power efficient screen. Unfortunately, there is no edge-to-edge display glass which we are used to, on Pro models. Other differences include lack of backlit keyboard and SD card reader. We would also like Apple to move to 16:9 aspect ratio which is fast gaining popularity with manufacturers.

FireWire fans will be disappointed with this new Apple MacBook because there is no port in there. We thought Apple would swap FireWire for SD card reader instead but the manufacturer didn’t do that. We don’t think lack of FireWire port is a deal-breaker for this system, this interface is slowing fading away.

Internal components on this new Apple MacBook are much similar to what we had in its predecessor. You get a Nvidia GeForce 9400 graphics card, the hard disk has been upgraded from 160 GB to 250 GB, the processor is now 2.26 GHz from 2.13 GHz. Configuration options on this laptops are limited, you get to increase the hard disk size to 500 GB or 320 GB and you can tweak the RAM up to 4 GB from the default 2 GB.

When we tested this new Apple MacBook with the previous ones that we saw in June 2009, we though the former was a bit faster than 2.13GHz MacBook in our iTunes and Photoshop tests. Such mainstream Core 2 Duo CPUs will easily outperform power conscious CPUs that you get on thin-and-light notebooks such as Toshiba T135-S1310 and HP Envy 13.

When tested for battery life, Apple MacBook Fall 2009 ran for a five hours and 42 minutes which is more than 13-inch MacBook Pro by 30 minutes and also more than its MacBook predecessor by an hour. When compared to other notebooks, Toshiba’s Satellite T135-S1310 which is powered by the economical Intel ULV processor gave us six hours of battery juice.

Apple MacBook Fall 2009 comes with a one year labor and parts warranty with this system but toll free telephone support is only for ninety days. There is an option to extend it to three years but you will have to pay a premium for it, at $249. Other support includes help over e-mail, video tutorials and online knowledge base. You can visit the manufacturers Website for software and driver downloads.
Nitty Gritty:

Costing in at $999 we think this Apple MacBook is a great alternative to the expensive MacBook Pros buy it if you can accept the absence of SD card slot and FireWire port.
